Legislative Wrap Up Luncheon
Legislators to Address Business Community at Annual Forum
This year's annual Legislative Lunch will again offer an opportunity for business leaders to hear firsthand about the latest in Springfield from four of Northbrook's legislators. The informative lunch program will provide a forum for each legislator to comment on the major issues of the session, including the latest proposals to deal with the state's budget deficit, how to reform the state's pension system, and pending proposals that could have an impact on businesses such as an increase in the state's minimum wage. They are also expected to address their views on Governor Rauner's "turnaround budget" that includes a "right to work zone" provision along with other proposed changes related to employment and the judicial system.Northbrook's state Senators Julie Morrison (D-29) and Daniel Biss (D-9) along with Representatives Elaine Nekritz (D-57) and Robyn Gabel 9 (D-18) will share their thoughts on these topics as well as their efforts to advance legislation in areas that they are most concerned about.
Both Sen. Biss and Rep. Nekritz are widely regarded as experts on the state's pension challenges and were instrumental in passage of the state's reform bill that passed in 2013. They will comment on the impact of the recent Illinois Supreme Court ruling against the bill, and how they intend to move forward.
Rep. Nekritz is an Assistant Majority Leader and chairs the Personnel and Pensions and the Judiciary-Civil committees. In addition to focusing on the state's fiscal challenges, one of her legislative priorities is revamping Illinois' energy policy to spur growth in green jobs.
Sen. Biss Chairs the Human Services Committee and serves on Appropriations and other committees dealing with Medicaid, education and oversight over financial institutions. He is a proponent of legislation that would require businesses to have reasonable security measures to prevent breaches and to disclose any data breaches to consumers and the Attorney General. Sen. Biss is also the author of the Illinois Secure Choice Savings Program that establishes a retirement savings plan for workers at businesses with 25 or more full-time employees. The bill goes into effect this month.
Sen. Morrison has leadership roles serving as Vice Chair of the Human Services Committee and Chair of the Subcommittee on Special Issues related to DCFS. She also serves on committees that deal with commerce, economic development and transportation. One of her legislative priorities is making it easier for new businesses to open in Illinois.
Earlier this year Rep. Gabel was appointed co-chair of the newly formed Violence Prevention Task Force. She also serves as the Chair of the House Human Services Committee, the Vice-chair of the House Human Services Appropriations committee and several other committees dealing with insurance, mass transit and business growth. During her time in the legislature, Rep. Gabel has been an outspoken proponent for children's safety, strengthening and improving our healthcare system and protecting natural resources.
Following comments by the legislators, there will be plenty of time for questions and answers.
As part of its ongoing advocacy efforts, the Chamber is offering one complimentary admission per membership with an advance registration. Additional registrations are $30; guests or members registering at the door are $35.
