Legislative Luncheon featuring Rep. Mark Kirk
Join the members of area chambers for this informative Legislative Luncheon with U. S. Representative Mark Kirk. Currently in his fourth term, Kirk represents the 10th District of Illinois, which stretches along Lake Michigan, running north to Waukegan and south to Wilmette. The district includes nearly 700,000 constituents. Kirk is a member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee and is co-chairman of the Tuesday Group, a caucus of mainstream Republican Members working collaboratively to advance a suburban agenda. Congressman Kirk is the author of a number of provisions which are now law, including funding for commuter rail, improving veterans health care, and a number of environmental initiatives. Topics Kirk is expected to address are his recent proposals to address the home mortgage crisis by reinstating the Home Owners’ Loan corporation (HOLC), established during the depression, which purchases troubled mortgages from lenders at a discount then offers reasonable refinancing options to homeowners. He also is expected to comment on a measure to provide tax credits for small businesses and individuals who do not have access to employer-provided health insurance.
Kirk has also been an avid supporter of measures to improve transportation initiatives, particularly mass transit. He has urged the state legislature to pass a state capital projects program, in order to take advantage of $2.7 billion in matching federal funds for CTA, Metra and Pace projects.
