Chief Economist for Northern Trust Paul Kasriel will be the keynote speaker at the Chamber’s annual Economic Outlook breakfast, held jointly with the Deerfield Bannockburn Riverwoods and Glenview Chambers on Wednesday, May 25th at the Wyndham Glenview Suites Hotel. Kasriel, an award-winning economist recognized for his accurate forecasting, is also known for his straightforward economic and financial market commentaries that often differ from conventional wisdom.
At this year’s informative presentation, Kasriel will address and explain the monetary policy “quantitative easing” (QE) which is not widely understood, but is currently being used by the Federal Reserve to help stimulate the economy. Kasriel will discuss the criterion he believes the Fed should use in guiding its decision on whether to terminate or continue its policy of QE which allows the Federal Reserve to purchase bonds and other bank assets. In conjunction with this, he will give his outlook for economic growth, including which sectors of the economy are expected to grow and which are expected to underperform. He will also address concerns about inflation and the fiscal challenges that lie ahead.
In January 2009, The Wall Street Journal and Forbes cited Kasriel as one of the few economists who early on identified the formation of the housing bubble and foresaw the economic and financial market havoc that would ensue once the bubble inevitably burst. The accuracy of his 2008 economic forecast was ranked in the top five of the Wall Street Journal survey panel of economists. In 2006, Kasriel received the prestigious Lawrence R. Klein Award for having the most accurate economic forecast among the Blue Chip survey participants for the years 2002 through 2005.
Through written commentaries containing his straightforward and often nonconsensus analysis of economic and financial market issues, Kasriel has developed a loyal following in the financial community. The Northern Trust economic website was listed as one of the top ten most interesting by The Wall Street Journal. He is also the co-author of a book entitled Seven Indicators that Move Markets.
Kasriel joined the economic research unit of the Northern Trust in 1986 as Vice President and Economist, and was named Senior Vice President and Director of Economic Research in 2000. He began his career as a research economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. Has taught courses in finance at the DePaul University Kellstadt Graduate School of Business and at the Northwestern University Kellogg Graduate School of Management. He currently serves on the Economic Advisory Committee of the American Bankers Association.
