Two managing directors with Great Lakes Advisors (GLA), a division of Wintrust Wealth Management, will be the featured keynote speakers at this year’s annual Economic Outlook breakfast.
Wells Frice, Senior Portfolio Manager of Great Lakes Large Cap Value Strategy, has guided large cap portfolios through more than twenty-five years of choppy markets including Black Monday, the Internet boom and bust, two Gulf wars, and most recently the Great Recession of 2008-2009. Gary Lenhoff, Director of Small Cap Strategies for Great Lakes and Portfolio Manager of the Wintrust Small Cap Opportunity Fund, started in the investment business in 1985 and has managed fixed income, equity and long/short equity hedge fund portfolios during his career. Both are Chartered Financial Analysts and members of both the CFA Institute and the CFA Society of Chicago.
For his part of the presentation, Frice will provide insight into the impact that Presidential elections have had historically on investment markets and what implications they may hold for the upcoming 2012 election. He will also discuss the investment principles that have helped GLA’s large cap strategy to outperform the broader market for almost 22 years, and why he finds the current investment climate particularly challenging.
Lenhoff will discuss the current global economic climate, focusing on the state of the US economy, the dangers of printing money, and the key elements necessary to generate sustainable economic growth and prosperity in the U.S. He will also briefly review the most recent data from the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) and comment on the current plight of small businesses in the United States.
Frice joined Great Lakes Advisors in 1998, having previously served as Portfolio Manager and Deputy Director of Research at First Chicago Bank and Trust. Lenhoff was Chief Investment Officer at Ironworks Capital Management prior to joining Wintrust Capital Management in 2010. Great Lakes Advisors and Wintrust Capital Management merged in August, 2011, creating a $4.2 billion investment firm managing equity and fixed income assets for a diverse group of clients and is now a part of the Wintrust Wealth Management family. Their parent company, Wintrust Financial Corporation, is a diversified, publicly traded financial services holding company with more than 20 subsidiaries, including Northbrook Bank & Trust.
